How to help a 4–5 year old with maths story problems

Short story problems put sums into real situations: sharing sweets, counting birds, buying fruit. Children learn to read a question, picture it and choose the right operation. At this age they mainly build reading for meaning and choosing the right operation.

Read the story aloud and let your child draw it. Drawing three apples and two more apples is the best first strategy.

Ten minutes a day is plenty. Stop while it is still fun, and praise the effort (“you kept going after that dead end”) more than the speed.

Questions parents ask

Why do children find word problems hard?

The sum is often easy; reading the story and choosing the operation is the hard part. Short, friendly stories build that skill.

Are these suitable for Indian, UK and US school levels?

Yes. They use everyday situations and simple numbers that fit Class 1–5, Years 1–5 and grades 1–5.

Do they come with answers?

Yes, every sheet has an answer key.
