How to help a 4–5 year old with picture algebra

Each picture stands for a number. Children use one line to find one picture, then use it to find the next. It is algebra without letters, and young children love it. At this age they mainly build early algebra and logical deduction.

Start with the line that has the same picture twice, such as apple + apple = 6. Counters make it concrete.

Ten minutes a day is plenty. Stop while it is still fun, and praise the effort (“you kept going after that dead end”) more than the speed.

Questions parents ask

Is picture algebra too hard for young children?

No. The pictures make unknown numbers feel like a game, and Level 1 needs only small additions.

What are these sometimes called?

Picture sums, picture equations or emoji maths puzzles.

Are answers included?

Yes, every puzzle has an answer key.
